"Achieving Sustainability by Preservation:
The Challenges in California"
Preserving buildings in a sustainable practice. It not only reduces waste and sprawl, but also leads to economic and social sustainability. However, in the effort to achieve sustainable cerification for a building, two major environmental benefits intrinsic to preservation are frequently overlooked. The building's embodied energy and its total life cycle. In California, the lack of seismic design and detailing in older buildings can pose significant challenges to preservation. It is in these areas where structural engineers have the greatest potential to contribute to sustainability through preservation.
The thoughtful design of structural upgrades beyond the minimum requirements of the Building Code can further extend the life cycle of the preserved building. Therefore, this presentation also emphasizes the importance of working engineers who are sensitive to and knowledgeable of both historic preservation and performance-based design.
MISSION: "To promote sustainable strategies and responsibility for the Inland Empire’s environmental legacy and built environment, fostering a healthy, prosperous and improved quality of life."
